The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's "2005 Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Surveillance Report," shows that infectious syphilis, gonorrhea, and Lymphogranuloma Venereum (LGV) are rising, with gay and bisexual men accounting for many of these cases. Data from several U.S. cities also suggest that an increasing number of MSM are engaging in sexual behavioral that place them at risk for STDs and HIV infection. Because STDs and the behaviors associated with them increase the likelihood of acquiring and transmitting HIV infection, the rise of STDs among MSM may be associated with an increase in HIV in MSM.
